Hank Center solar panels pass test, start converting sunlight to power

Firelands Electric workers put the finishing touches on the array of solar energy panels atop the Joyce E. Hank Sheffield Lake Community Center Aug. 18.

The array of grant-financed solar panels atop the Joyce E. Hank Sheffield Lake Community Center was inspected by the Sheffield Lake Fire Department Aug. 18, after which work was completed and the solar array tested by Firelands Electric cooperative on Aug. 19. Now the process of converting solar energy to electrical power for the community center can begin in earnest. According to Firelands Electric, the solar array generates about 17,500 watts instantly- when the sun is shining.

Sheffield Lake grant administrator Bill Gardner estimated that on sunny days, the solar panels could generate enough electricity to power the community center. On cloudy days it will generate less power and, of course, none at night. Gardner estimated that over the course of a year, the solar array would generate enough electricity to reduce the center’s electric bill by about 15 to 17 percent.

It’s the latest result of Mayor John Piskura and Sheffield Lake City Council’s efforts to make Sheffield Lake a “green city” Existing wind generators at the Community Park boat launch and in the Shoreway Shopping Center’s parking lot are already on line, reducing the electric bills of Shoreway merchants. The new solar array will serve to reduce the city’s bills for electricity used at the Hanks Community Center.
