New playground equipment is just part of the recent $700,000 renovation of Cove Park.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will celebrate the new Cove Park, which has undergone a $700,000 revitalization. Family-friendly activities will be part of the celebration from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday with the ribbon cutting scheduled for 6 p.m.

The city has worked for three years to revitalize the 3-acre Cove Park, located north of the railroad tracks between Cove and Thoreau avenues. Improvements include new playground equipment, a new playing field surface, a picnic shelter, benches, bike racks and picnic tables. The parking lot was upgraded by replacing two-thirds of the hard surface with pervious pavers.

“On-site stormwater management is especially important in urban areas, and the city of Lakewood is committed to taking a leadership role. This park redevelopment offered a great opportunity to do just that,” said city planner Michelle Nochta.

The park is located within a low-moderate income area, which enabled the city to use Community Development Block Grant money to fund the project.

“These renovations were truly community driven,” said Councilman Dan O'Malley, whose Ward 4 includes Cove Park. “I commend the Citizens Advisory Committee for recognizing the great need to reinvest in Cove Park and to the many residents who came out to offer their suggestions at community meetings.”

Lakewood Public Library, the Lakewood YMCA and other community organizations will lead activities during the event, which will take place rain or shine. Parking is available at the entrance adjacent to Cove Avenue.
