False alarm

“A resident reported a possible sinking,” USCG Petty Officer Spencer said Saturday. “We searched for several hours but found no debris or other evidence of a sinking.” A Coast Guard rescue boat from Lorain, a helicopter from the Detroit Coast Guard Station in Michigan and an ODNR Division of Watercraft boat searched the area for nearly four hours. Coast Guard personnel walked the beach and an Avon Lake Police Department boat joined in the search, but not even an oil slick was found in near-shore waters in the vicinity of the Joyce E. Hanks Community Center at 4575 Lake Road. An Edgewater Drive resident called the Lorain Coast Guard station before noon Saturday to report that an approximately 30-foot pleasure craft appeared to be sinking. Press photo – John Edwards
